Getting to Know Mequon

Mequon is the most populous city in Ozaukee County and stretches to Lake Michigan, where the shoreline is lined with clay bluffs 80 to 140 feet high. The Milwaukee River and Pigeon Creek wind through the eastern part of the city, and a large tamarack swamp lines the Little Menomonee River in the west. German immigrants farmed the area in the 1840s, and some of those farmsteads are still standing and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1848 Jonathan Clark House Museum and the 1839 Isham Day House preserve some of the community’s earliest history. Concordia University Wisconsin is located in Mequon. Mequon recorded −40 °F on “Cold Sunday,” January 17, 1982.

Mequon Homes, Weather and What They Need

Mequon grew from farmland into a suburb after World War II and incorporated in 1957, so most homes sit on larger lots and range from mid-century and new-traditional builds to 19th-century farmhouses. Homes near the lake deal with stronger winds and more humidity off Lake Michigan, and inland homes see deep cold snaps.

Neighboring Communities and Permits

Mequon surrounds the Village of Thiensville and borders Cedarburg and Grafton to the north, Germantown to the west, and Bayside, River Hills, Brown Deer and Milwaukee to the south. Mequon permits go through the Department of Community Development Inspections Division at City Hall, 11333 N. Cedarburg Road (City Hall 262-242-3100; Permit Coordinator 262-236-2924). The city lists roofing, siding and windows among the projects that need a permit, requires a zoning form for exterior work, and says to allow 1–2 weeks for a permit to be issued.

What We Do Most in Mequon
